Temple Etz Chaim USY teens and Casa Pacifica teens work together on a monthly basis to participate in community service activities.  The program is called Kids Helping Kids.  TEC teens are paired with teens from Casa Pacifica for Service Learning projects.  The goal is for the teens to have an experience helping others, which allows the Casa Pacifica teens to be on the giving end, as opposed to always being the ones to receive help and support from others.  During this particular event, teens wrote letters to our servicemen, and collected items to send in care packages.  The program began with a discussion about freedom.  Click here for the lesson plan.

Some of the teens reflected on the experience:

“Sometimes when we do an activity, we just do the activity.  But this was different.  Learning about freedom and discussing people’s different interpretations of what freedom is, made this project more meaningful.” (Jeremy, 8th grade participant)

“Writing the letters was a thoughtful and fun experience.  We all got to forget about our own problems and share a genuine appreciation for the incredible work that our soldiers do. ” (Kayla, 12th grade participant)
