TKN Teens at Mitzvah Day-2

Congregation Or Ami‘s TKN Teens (whose name is a play on tikkun, the Hebrew word for repair) represent at Or Ami’s annual Mitzvah Day November! These teens helped facilitate the packing of 400 duffel bags, each individually packed by an Or Ami congregant with a specific age and gender in mind. At the end of the event, all 400 bags were passed along through the Ventura County and Orange County Dept. of Children Services and into the hands of Foster children most in need.

Some thoughts from parents and teens included the following…
“At times during the day I would stop and look around to see a packed synagogue with people of all ages focused on one large social action project. I was truly amazed with the enormity, energy and excitement that went into planning this day.” – Shelly H. (parent)
“Mitzvah Day at Or Ami provides a unique opportunity to positively impact the life of a child I do not know…As much fun as it is to participate in the event, it is even more fulfilling to know that the bags packed within the walls of Congregation Or Ami will go out into the community to help kids in need.” – Abby G. (teen participant)
The goal of the the TKN Teens program is to expose the teens to a wide variety of volunteer experiences – rather than focusing in one or two areas, we really hope to get out there and “try out”, in a hands on way, some of the many ways we can help people and the planet.  The hope is that in reflecting on these experiences later in the year, the teens can begin to articulate which projects they find most effective and meaningful to them personally.
